Meet new addition to the Afrikult. family! L-R: Uviwe Ntsaluba and Keren Lasme

We are ecstatic to share our newest addition to the Afrikult. team: Uviwe Ntsaluba and Keren Lasme! Both Uviwe and Keren have joined us in overseeing Afrikult.’s website and social media – and we are thrilled to welcome them on-board.

In May 2017, Afrikult. advertised its inaugural Web Editorial and Social Media Internship programme for two creatives to join the team for three months. The advertisement was met by over twenty applications hailing from Angola, Botswana, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, Uganda, UK and Ukraine! After interviewing the shortlist, we asked Uviwe and Keren if they’d like to join us.

Read more about Uviwe and Keren below.

Uviwe Ntsaluba | July – September 2017

Uviwe is currently completing a Masters in African Studies at the University of Birmingham. Uviwe’s dissertation is focused on representations of Masculinity in South African Popular Television. Uviwe is hopelessly addicted to romance novels, and all things supernatural and otherworldly. She enjoys all types of African fiction, but her focus has always been on exploring the boundaries of queer fiction in Africa; especially how queer bodies and lives are represented in literature and visual media.

Uviwe’s favourite book is The Quiet Violence of Dreams by South African author K Sello Duiker, who also happens to be the one dead author she would love to spend an hour with.

Keren Lasme | October – December 2017

Keren is currently completing her MA in African Studies at SOAS University of London. Her research focuses on African philosophy and aims to demonstrate how longstanding tradition of body adornments inform African aesthetics.

What Keren enjoys most from African literature:

Orature, Oral literature, Historical fiction, Creative non-fiction and Science fiction.

We’d like to take this moment to thank everyone who applied for our internship programme – the response was encouraging and we know this is the first of many to come. In case you missed it (or simply want to re-jog your memory) check out the ad we posted in May.

We hope you join us in welcoming Uviwe and Keren.

With literary love and gratitude, Marcelle and Zaahida
